Eye Health: 4 Tips for Coping with The Change of Season
The air is getting cooler, the trees are changing colours and hoodies are finally making a comeback in our wardrobes … you guessed it, fall is just around the corner! There’s always something exciting about the change of season, but the drop in temperature and less daylight calls for a few day-to-day adjustments. To help prepare, here are a few easy habits to incorporate into your eye and body care routine to make the most of the colourful season!
1 - Only Comfort Allowed!
The arrival of the cold weather also symbolizes the return of heating the indoors and the car. The air is dryer, and the change of season also means seasonal allergies! If you experience eye discomfort, it’s a good idea to reduce the number of hours you wear your contact lenses by wearing your glasses for longer periods.
OPTOPLUS tip: if needed, comfort drops adapted to contact lenses can also be used.
2 - Fog-Free Glasses
Fall may bring more frequent showers, which can cause your glasses to fog up and get dirty. It’s important to clean your glasses more often, but be careful not to damage them!
Wash the lenses with anti-reflective lens solution or cool water and moisturizer-free hand soap. A tissue can be used to gently dry wet lenses, followed by a microfiber cloth to remove any dust. It is important to never use a handkerchief on dry lenses, as the fibre is too hard and could cause micro-scratches to your lenses, even on anti-reflective lenses. Scarves and sweaters should also be avoided as they too are not soft enough!
OPTOPLUS tip: there are numerous products on the market to prevent your lenses from fogging up. Ask our opticians for advice on which product is best for you.
3 - Foolproof Skin
The colder air can take its toll on the skin and it is important to adapt your skincare routine to the new weather. To remove dead skin cells and allow your face to better absorb products, use a chemical exfoliant – much gentler than microbeads and nut peels – as often as 2-3 times a week. A good fragrance-free moisturizer combined with hyaluronic acid serum is the key to luminous, well-hydrated skin in fall. Don’t forget the best beauty tip of all, drink plenty of water, it’s the bare minimum!
OPTOPLUS tip: For both eyes and skin, it is important to protect yourself from the sun’s harmful rays, even when it seems to have hidden behind the clouds. Wear sunglasses and good sunscreen every day of the year.
4 - Morale Boost
The drop in light levels is the biggest cause of energy and vitality loss during the colder season, so make sure you’re properly prepared by incorporating vitamins into your routine to give you the boost you need to keep your spirits high! Vitamin C and D supplements and omega-3 capsules will not only help you make up for the lack of light, but they’re also just as beneficial for eye health.
OPTOPLUS tip: target good-for-the-eyes foods such as avocados, tomatoes, citrus fruit, carrots and leafy vegetables and make them the stars of your lunches! For inspiration, check out the best recipes for eyecare.
