Tint and Lens Protection

Sunglass lenses come in a wide range of colours and tints—from brown and gray to green. But despite common belief, darker lenses don’t necessarily offer better protection. What matters is the UV rating.

The UV index measures the intensity of ultraviolet radiation from the sun and the potential risk to your eye health. While manufacturers voluntarily follow industry labelling standards, compliant sunglasses generally fall into one of three categories:

  1. Fashion Sunglasses: Lightly tinted lenses for low-sunlight conditions. They block up to 60% of visible light and UVA, and between 87.5% and 95% of UVB.
  2. General-Purpose Sunglasses: Block between 60% and 92% of visible light and UVA, and between 95% and 99% of UVB. Ideal for bright days—and the only type suitable for driving.
  3. High-Protection Sunglasses: Designed for extended exposure to strong sunlight. They block up to 97% of visible light, up to 98.5% of UVA, and at least 99% of UVB.
